Tammy CarrickAs the child of missionaries, Tammy Carrick grew up in Guatemala and came to the United States for her senior year in high school. She took several college programs, but before she could complete her degree, she learned she was pregnant with her daughter.

With one child and another on the way, she realized they’d need more income to supplement her husband’s salary. Tammy remembered her interest in medicine and looked for a career that would allow her to pursue her dream while still caring for her children. She decided on a career as a medical transcriber.

She began asking a few of her medical transcriptionist friends if they knew what to look for in a medical transcription program. After hearing their feedback and considering the options available to her, Tammy chose Allied Medical School.

"I always felt like Allied’s goal was my goal."

After enrolling, she dove right into the program. She had wanted to be in the medical field for many years and enjoyed immersing herself in the new language of medical terminology, finishing that part of the program in only a few months.

She enjoyed interacting with the staff at Allied, which she felt was an important part of her education. The friendly staff helped keep her going, so she didn’t fall behind. But Tammy’s toughest critic was always herself and she expected the best. Allied helped her achieve that.

"Allied was so very helpful with everything. If I thought something was wrong, they would help me understand it."

The medical transcription home study practice exercises helped Tammy learn the different ways medical professionals provide notes and the ways that she could develop her own style and shortcuts. Learning from home provided her with more time to take care of her family and herself.

"I could work any time I wanted. I could get way ahead and take a couple weeks off if I got burned out. I didn’t have to worry about it with vacation or holidays."

Tammy CarrickNow, Tammy enjoys her career as a medical transcriptionist. When she was hired, her medical transcription training helped her function as a professional from the very beginning and she attributes Allied for this success.

"I didn’t think I’d do that well on the test my employer gave me but I wanted to give it a try because it’s a really good company. And, when I did it, I thought I’d done horribly, but I got a 92! And that says a lot about Allied, because I wasn’t sure of myself and yet when I thought I was at my worst, I had done incredibly well. That goes a long way because now, when I do the transcriptions, it’s coming more second nature because of the education I got and how it was presented through Allied."
